I bought a region 2 Samsung DVD-390 from Greece 4 days ago. I have unsuccessfully tried many of the hacks for the 191 model (which is more or less the same type minus a usb port), BUT found that the hack posted by jsprod (August 30 2009) was effective for my player. Hence, 1)a big thanks to where is due (namely jsprod)
and 2) here I quote jsprod:

"...............................
1.turn on the dvd without disc in the tray
2.press repeat (not repeat a-b)
3.press fast forward (button under the zoom-button)
4.press fast rewind
5.press fast forward
6.press up
7.press down

once this sequence has finished, the number 9 appears in top left corner!
This hack works for me.
................................"

I'm not sure if this is necessary, but just in case, open and close tray, and turn off and then back on your DVD. Most protocols mention this hack epilogue, so I added it just in case.
jsprod, you rule! 10Q !!

ITALY (REG 2): Samsung P-390

1. Switched Video option from "Auto" to "Pal"

2. Checked the default highlighted number in the grid:

-turn on the dvd without disc in the tray
-repeat (not repeat a-b)
-fast rewind (below the DISC MENU)
-next chapter (above the RETURN)
-fast forward
-previous chapter (right above the MENU)
-play

The highlighted numbers are: 2 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 17 - 19 - 21 - 25 (this is a REG 2 DVD-P390)

To make it region free:

-turn on the dvd without disc in the tray
-press repeat (not repeat a-b)
-press fast forward (button under the zoom-button)
-press fast rewind
-press fast forward
-press up
-press down
-number '9' appears on top left corner of the TV

PLEASE NOTE: The highlighted numbers in the grid remain still the same even after making the region free hack: no changes there at all!!! (hence, why bother to mess with them at all?)

Thanks for the help: worked like a charm with my new Samsung (tested with DVD region 0, 1 and 2).
